SEO or Search Engine Optimization is important for every website from ranking and traffic perspectives. There are thousands of websites on different niches and topics that are ranking highly on search engines like Google, Bing & Yahoo. The reason for that is great quality content with relevant niche and properly researched keywords. Higher rankings bring more traffic and with more traffic, you can convert your visitors into buying customers generating revenue. In this post, I will tell you how to research keywords for SEO that will rank faster and higher in search engines.
It is not just about what tool you use to research keywords but you also need to follow certain procedures to choose a keyword that is relevant, sensible and at the same time gets ranked quickly.
What is a keyword?
A keyword is a term, phrase, word, sentence, or whatever you type in the search bar of Google, Bing, or Yahoo search engines. The aim of typing the keyword is to find relevant results in the form of products or solutions that will fulfill your need.
What is the need to research keywords?
Researching keywords is important to meet the relevancy and higher-ranking criteria in search engines. Researching keywords should be the premise of every website owner to find terms or phrases that have low competition and a good amount of traffic.
Everything that is searched is called keywords so researching the keywords according to the searches, and your website niche will get you higher rankings and more traffic.
Providing content on researched keywords allows Google and other search engines to give your website default ranking authority.
Types of keywords
Your website ranking also depends on the type of keywords you use to write the content. So, what are the types of keywords? The most commonly used keywords are divided into two categories:
Short-tail keywords: These are a few words or short phrases. For example, men’s diet or men’s dieting. Generally, these types of keywords have a high volume of traffic which is one of the factors you must look for. At the same time, short-tail keywords are not easy to rank due to high competition.
Long-tail keywords: As the name suggests, these types of keywords have long phrases or sentences most likely a question. For example, what is the perfect diet for men? Or how to reduce weight through men’s diet? Contrary to the short-tail keywords, long-tail keywords rank faster owing to the low competition but the traffic is also much lower.
If your website niche talks about specific product reviews with information on its buying and utilization then keywords for such topics are categorized under commercial intent keywords.
No matter what you write but make sure to remember the type of keywords you are choosing for your content. This may have an impact on the number of visitors per month and time taken by search engines for ranking.
Tips to follow while researching keywords
Keep in mind the following points while researching keywords:
Monthly visitors: Your targeted keyword should have a decent number of visitors every month. A volume of 30 to 100 visitors researching the keyword per month is an ideal figure. A higher volume of visitors ensures quicker visibility and ranking for your targeted keywords.
Relevant and sensible keywords: The word, phrase, or sentence for a keyword should make sense. Minor grammatical mistakes can be avoided but overall, the keyword should look genuine and relevant to your content.
As an example, ‘best tips for men’s dieting’ can also be used as ‘the best tips for men’s dieting’ but not as ‘best tips men’s dieting’ which doesn’t make sense.
Low competition: Look for a keyword that has lower competition. Competition in terms of the number of websites and search engine pages. It is better to choose a keyword that has less than 100 pages or competitive websites. Lesser the competition faster will be the rankings.
The above metrics are not something that you can measure anywhere. You will have to take some help from the keyword research tools. There are many keyword research tools that you can find but we will use Jaaxy to illustrate how to research keywords for SEO.
How to research keywords for SEO
We know what is a keyword and why researching a keyword is important following certain rules/tips. Now, we will do keyword research using Jaaxy that I personally use to research keywords as well as we will also take some help from Google on finding the keywords.
With Google, there is something called the auto-complete section. When you type in certain words or sentences in the Google search bar, Google will automatically display multiple results in the form of a dropdown list. Let’s take an example of men’s dieting in the below screenshot.
The dropdown results will pop down once you input the search term. Although, there are no actual numbers or metrics about these results but they are determined by Google itself. Do not underestimate or ignore auto-complete section results as these are based on the latest searches performed by different people relevant to your targeted keyword.
Google is trying to tell you that these are also some of the terms or queries performed recently and are popular among the audiences which you should take a look at. It is highly recommended that you add these results as keywords for further research and content creation.
You can go ahead and build content around the Google findings but there is no visibility on how many people are actually searching for those keywords in a day, or a month, etc. Similarly, we don’t know how many websites are already having content on those keywords that are already ranked by search engines. This is why you need to dig deeper into finding the analysis on keywords and this is where a keyword research tool comes in.
So, let’s take the example of keywords that we got through the Google auto-complete section on men’s dieting.
For men’s dieting terms we got men’s dieting plan and men’s dieting tips. Now, let’s research the numbers against these terms in Jaaxy.
So, according to Jaaxy the average monthly and daily traffic for men’s dieting plan is less than 10 with 3 competing websites. The keyword is good for ranking faster with only 3 websites in competition but there is very low traffic.
The second keyword term is men’s dieting tips which again has a traffic volume of less than 10 with 2 competing websites. Ideally, we want to have a keyword with more than 30 searches a month. Does that mean we can avoid these keyword terms?
Remember, these terms were auto-populated by Google which means they are popular and searched frequently. These keywords are ideal for people who have just started to build their websites. Even with less amount of traffic the content around such keywords will rank faster owing to a low competition which will give the new websites quick indexing and recognition among search engines.
So, my recommendation is if your website is new or has very little content then you must consider such keywords for content creation to gain authority in search engines.
The next term that had many auto-populated keywords was on men’s diet. Going through the auto-populated results, not every term or phrase is relevant to our niche which is men’s diet for weight loss.
For example, men’s diet for baby boy, men’s diet for pre-pregnancy, men’s diet for conceiving a boy, etc. which are keywords that you can write about but not relevant to our niche. So, we will avoid such keywords and research the remaining ones.
We are left with three keyword phrases:
Men’s diet plan for weight loss
Men’s diet plan to lose belly fat
Men’s diet plan to lose weight
Let’s check their results in Jaaxy.
Men’s diet plan for weight loss – The average monthly traffic is 24 which is very close to our ideal volume. The competition is very high with 200 websites/pages already ranking in search engines for this keyword.
Men’s diet plan to lose belly fat – The average monthly traffic is less than 10 which is not encouraging however it has very low competition of just 11 websites/pages in search engines.
Men’s diet plan to lose weight – The average monthly traffic is more than 100 which is perfect and there are 100 websites/pages for the competition which is not bad.
Out of the three, our first preference of keyword should be ‘Men’s diet plan to lose weight’. The keyword is relevant, sensible, has ideal monthly visitors, and a reasonable number of websites to compete. Quality content around this keyword will rank considerably quickly and gain authority owing to a high volume of traffic.
The second choice should be ‘Men’s diet plan to lose belly fat’ as it has a higher chance of ranking with only 11 competing websites. The relevancy and sensible elements are there even with less amount of traffic.
‘Men’s diet plan for weight loss’ is debatable. The traffic is good but with 200 websites in competition, it may take longer to get rankings in search engines. An authoritative website can afford to use this keyword for creating content but it may not suit beginners.
Likewise, you can do many searches with different terms and phrases in Google and research them in your preferred keyword tool. Alternatively, and to save time you can also do direct research in keyword tools and find many options to build your content around with proper SEO.
While choosing a keyword always remember to apply the above tips and researching process. The more you research, the higher will be your chances to find multiple choices of keywords that are relevant and makes sense. Do not forget to build the list of keywords that you have researched.
Remember, the final choice of keywords depends on individual preferences and your online presence.
Finding keywords for your content is very easy because keywords are related to everything we do in our day-to-day lives. But researching the keywords is important. Not only it gives you higher rankings in search engines but it is also beneficial for the monetization of your content.
Google is your boss to find the terms however your research is incomplete without following the above tips and procedure to find an ideal keyword.
The research of keywords can be done in any keyword tool provided it covers the metrics mentioned in this article.
I am sure you have got a fair idea of how to find and research keywords for your next article. If you are still looking for a keyword research tool or unsure which one to use then check out Jaaxy as my no.1 recommendation. You will find everything that a keyword tool should have at an affordable price.
